SPECIFICATIONS
Due to our continuing program of research and devel-
opment, the specifications herein are subject to change
without notice.
Note: Specifications may differ from country to country.
Intended use
The tool is intended for impact drilling in brick, concrete
and stone as well as for drilling without impact in wood,
metal, ceramic and plastic.
Power supply
The tool should be connected only to a power supply of
the same voltage as indicated on the nameplate, and can
only be operated on single-phase AC supply. They are
double-insulated in accordance with European Standard
and can, therefore, also be used from sockets without
earth wire.
Safety hints
For your own safety, please refer to the enclosed safety
instructions.
SPECIFIC SAFETY RULES
GEB003-2
DO NOT let comfort or familiarity with product
(gained from repeated use) replace strict adherence
to hammer drill safety rules. If you use this power
tool unsafely or incorrectly, you can suffer serious
personal injury.
1. Wear ear protectors with impact drills. Exposure
to noise can cause hearing loss.
2. Use auxiliary handles supplied with the tool.
Loss of control can cause personal injury.
3. Hold power tools by insulated gripping surfaces
when performing an operation where the cutting
tool may contact hidden wiring or its own cord.
Contact with a “live” wire will make exposed metal
parts of the tool “live” and shock the operator.
4. Always be sure you have a firm footing.
Be sure no one is below when using the tool in
high locations.
5. Hold the tool firmly with both hands.
6. Keep hands away from rotating parts.
7. Do not leave the tool running. Operate the tool
only when hand-held.
8. Do not touch the bit or the workpiece immedi-
ately after operation; they may be extremely hot
and could burn your skin.
9. Some material contains chemicals which may be
toxic. Take caution to prevent dust inhalation
and skin contact. Follow material supplier safety
data.
SAVE THESE INSTRUCTIONS.
WARNING:
MISUSE or failure to follow the safety rules stated in
this instruction manual may cause serious personal
injury.
FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION
CAUTION:
Always be sure that the tool is switched off and
unplugged before adjusting or checking function on the

CAUTION:
Before plugging in the tool, always check to see that
the switch trigger actuates properly and returns to the
“OFF” position when released.
To start the tool, simply pull the switch trigger. Tool speed
is increased by increasing pressure on the switch trigger.
Release the switch trigger to stop.
For continuous operation, pull the switch trigger and then
push in the lock button.

Advantages and Disadvantages

Advantages

  • Powerful percussion action: up to 44,800 blows per minute for effective masonry drilling.
  • Variable speed trigger (0–2,800 min–1) with lock-on for comfortable continuous operation.
  • Lightweight and compact: 1.8 kg and 303 mm overall length for better control and reduced fatigue.
  • Versatile modes: hammering for concrete and rotation-only for wood, metal and plastic.
  • Complete kit: supplied with plastic carrying case, auxiliary handle and depth gauge for portability and precision.
VS

Disadvantages

  • Corded operation requires suitable mains voltage and limits mobility compared with cordless options.
  • Some models require a keyed chuck and key handling, which is slower than keyless systems.
  • No built-in dust extraction; optional blow-out bulb or external extraction needed for cleaner holes.
  • Maintenance (brushes, repairs) should be performed by authorized Makita service centers.
  • Exposed to high torque at breakthrough; requires firm two-hand grip and safe handling to avoid injury.

Frequently Asked Questions

A

The drill is intended for impact drilling in brick, concrete and stone and for rotation-only drilling in wood, metal, ceramic and plastic. Use tungsten-carbide tipped bits for masonry and suitable wood/metal bits for other materials.

Is this answer helpful?

A

Typical capacities for HP1640/HP1640F/HP1641/HP1641F are: concrete up to 16 mm, steel up to 13 mm and wood up to 30 mm, with variable no-load speed from 0–2,800 min–1 and blows up to 44,800 bpm.

Is this answer helpful?

A

Use the action mode change lever: slide it to the right (g symbol) for rotation with hammering and to the left (m symbol) for rotation only. Always move the lever fully to the desired position to avoid damage.

Is this answer helpful?

A

For keyed chucks (HP1640/HP1640F) insert the bit fully, hand-tighten the chuck then use the chuck key in all three holes evenly. For sleeve-type chucks (HP1641/HP1641F) turn the sleeve to open, insert the bit, then tighten by turning the sleeve clockwise.

Is this answer helpful?

Makita HP1640K Electric Percussion Drill incl. Case Manual

The Makita HP1640K Electric Percussion Drill incl. Case Manual introduces a compact, versatile corded percussion drill designed for both trade and DIY use. Built around a 1.8 kg body and a 303 mm overall length, the HP1640K family (HP1640/HP1640F/HP1641/HP1641F) delivers variable speed control (0–2,800 min–1) and high-impact rates (up to 44,800 bpm) for efficient drilling in masonry, concrete and stone while offering rotation-only mode for wood, metal, ceramic and plastic.

This drill emphasizes practical features: a variable-pressure trigger with lock-on function for continuous operation, reversing switch for screwdriving or clearing stuck bits, and a mode-change lever to switch between hammering and plain drilling. Some models include an integrated lamp for low-light tasks. The tool accepts tungsten-carbide tipped bits for hammer drilling and supports both keyed and keyless chuck systems depending on the model variant. A side auxiliary handle and a depth gauge improve control and repeatable hole depths, and an optional blow-out bulb aids hole cleaning.

Safety and durability are central to the manual: the HP1640K is double-insulated for safe use on single-phase AC supplies and designed to European safety class a/II. The manual highlights specific safety rules — use ear protection, always fit the auxiliary handle, hold the tool by insulated surfaces when electrical hazards are possible, maintain stable footing, and avoid excessive pressure that damages bits and the tool. Maintenance guidance stresses disconnecting power before inspection and recommends Makita authorized service centers for repairs and carbon brush replacement.

Accessories and kit contents typically include a plastic carrying case, chuck key or keyless chuck, auxiliary handle, depth gauge, blow-out bulb, safety goggles and a selection of compatible bits and hole saws. Practical operation tips cover bit installation and removal (both keyed and sleeve-type chucks), setting the depth gauge, and best practices for drilling in wood (use guide-screw bits), metal (center-punch and cutting lubricant), and masonry (light pressure, intermittently clear debris).

Overall, the Makita HP1640K is presented as a reliable, easy-to-handle percussion drill suited to varied drilling tasks, combining ergonomics, power control and safety features in a portable kit with a carrying case.

Notes

  • Models HP1640F/HP1641F feature a lamp; follow lens-care notes (dry cloth, no solvents).
  • Always switch off and unplug before adjustments or maintenance.
  • Use only recommended accessories to avoid injury or damage.
